Protecting the skin or avoiding sun exposure is the best preventive measure. Needless to say, it is the desire of most to seek the sun (especially in ones youth) when outdoors, so it is imperative that a proper SPF be applied throughout the day as well as covering up whether it be using an umbrella, large hat, or sunglasses. Doing so will alleviate skin-lightening challenges.
